About
It all begins at the age of six, on the piano stool of his grandmother, herself a classical concert pianist. It is there, in that first contact with the keyboard, that a vocation is born that will never fade. Nat Laurens continued his studies at the Conservatoire and the École Nationale in Paris, won the Nerini and Léopold Bellan competitions, trained as a music teacher at the Martenot school, then studied orchestral conducting under Jean-Sébastien Loiseau. An exceptional path that would lead him to the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he worked as a consultant. Pianist, composer, conductor, choirmaster, musical theatre performer.
His music, as the press has put it: he has "an orchestra in his piano". Critics have compared him to Debussy, Ravel, Keith Jarrett, Stan Getz and Lionel Hampton, not because he imitates, but because his art reaches the same human depth and invites listeners to travel through a world entirely of its own. Eleven albums, a symphony in four movements (the Symphonie Imaginaire), compositions for theatre, film and radio: for decades Nat Laurens has been building a singular body of work, driven by one constant demand: that of true emotion. On stage, solo, in duo, trio, quartet or quintet, he creates each evening a space of particular intimacy, where the fusion of jazz and classical harmonies carries the audience away.
Nat Laurens is one of those artists that categories cannot contain.
